Follow Pauline - Episode5 - Biarritz

After 4 months on the road, Pauline finally came back home for a few days of rest. She receives her team mate Bethany Hamilton (HAW) who came for a 6* WQS event in Seignosse. Pauline took the chance to introduce her region to Bethany before going on with another contest in Portugal and then flying to Mentawaiis with the Rip Curl Girl International Team.

She’s back only 10 days before the start of the competition in Biarritz during which she accommodates her friend Jessi Myley Dyer.
During those 10 days, Pauline goes back to her routine: physical trainings with her private coach and free sessions in La Côte des Basques where she frequently sees her good friend Lee-Ann Curren who will compete as a wildcard in the event. She’s also supported by Patrick Flores (French Team Head Coach) and Gilles Darqué (her Team Manager).
This support won’t be too much to help her dealing with the stress on one of the most important competition in Pauline’s young career. With a good result, her requalification on the WT may be secured for next season. Pauline’s currently 9th at the ASP ranking and only 10 girls will keep their spot on the tour.

Pauline’s well surrounded and it works! She surfs every heat with the highest concentration. And if you add the presence of her family and friends on the beach you get the best result of her career with a qualification to the semi-finals. But nobody can stop Carissa Moore this year and Pauline is beaten by the new ASP Women World Champion. Carissa makes it through the final (again) and Pauline gets to be part of her crowning ceremony with this amazing 3rd place, everyone’s happy!
Next and last step: Huntington from 1st to 6th of August

A new continent for this 5th event of the ASP Women's Tour! This time, the girls landed in Rio where the population is probably the most passionate one they'll see this year. Pauline had never signed so many autographs!

The first Round had been launched with some clean conditions. Pauline ended 2nd of this heat, in which she was facing Steph Gilmore and Suelen Naraisa, the young Brazilian wildcard. "Every heat is very hard", declared Pauline just before her Round 2 against Felicity Palmateer. Fortunately, she managed to win over the Australian wildcard thanks to a solid performance.

After 2 days off, spent cruising in Rio, the event organizers decided to run the whole woman contest on Sunday before the arrival of a potential storm. During this long final day, Pauline surfed against Sally Fitzgibbons and Sofia Mulanovich in Round 3. With a former World Champion and the ASP ranking leader in the heat, the young French rookie strongly defended herself but ends 2nd and had to go to Round 4 for a second chance to get to the quarter finals.

Coco Ho, Pauline's opponent in Round 4, was controlling the heat. But on her last wave, Pauline managed to take the lead after a long wait for judges' marks. In quarter finals, she met Sally Fitzgibbons again.

Despite her good performance, Pauline is beaten by the future finalist and ends her Brazilian stay with an encouraging 5th place.
After a 4 month trip around the world, it's now time to go back to France.
Next contest: Biarritz from 11th to 17th of July

CRUISING IN SYDNEY !

To be continued...

We're back on the road to Sydney's northern beaches for stop 4th of the WT: the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic.

For her first session at Dee Why, Pauline has come up against a bunch of local surfers in some solid conditions. The wave's have a dangerous take off but with many fat sections down the line. You have to be patient and wait for the good one!

For the second day of competition Pauline observes and tries to get advices from other competitors about this tricky wave. Up against Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), four times reigning ASP World Champion and her Rip Curl Team partner Alana Blanchard (HAW), Pauline finishes 2nd in Round 1.

Fifteen minutes later, Pauline's again in the water against Melanie Bartels (HAW). She controls this heat until the very last second when Mel finds a small but powerful wave which allows her to take the lead and advance to Round 3. For the first time, Pauline ends a WT contest in 13th place. A frustrating way to leave the competition but an experience every professional surfer has to face every now and then.

With her friend Jessi, Pauline has now enough time to visit Sydney: from Manly to Chinatown, via the Opera and Sydney Harbour Bridge, she truly discovers what surrounds her for the first time of the season.
For Pauline, Dee Why is the end of a four month trip across Australia. She now flies to Brazil for the next event of the WT in Rio, always with the same smile on her face.

WHO WANTS TO FOLLOW PAULINE ADO ?

Who wants to follow Pauline Ado ? Pauline masters the art of changing her flight tickets, and I have to follow her!
And here we are, one day earlier in New Plymouth, New Zealand for the 3rd stop of the ASP Women’s World Tour, the Subaru Pro TSB Bank Women Surf Festival. One day of “rest” well deserved. Pauline’s mother joined us in New Plymouth, a support for Pauline who also enjoys being spoiled.

The first day is off. What a surprise considering the offshore wind blows up to 100km/h! New Zealand reveals many surprises. Between the wind gusts, the black sand, the maori dances and the spectacular landscapes, this island is full of emotions.

On the second day the wind calms down and the contest can start.
After a 3rd place in her first heat, Pauline defeats Laura Enever (AUS) in the reperchage round before loosing again in Round 3.

In Round 4, she faces Silvana Lima (BRA) and finally gets qualified for the very first Quarter-Finals of her young career. But in front of her friend Tyler Wright (AUS), Pauline can’t find the solution and ends this contest with a 5th place. Few hours after her elimination, Pauline’s changing her tickets again in order to land one day earlier in Sydney for the next contest. She really masters this sport since her mother and I now have to stay one more night in Auckland…

FREE SESSIONS @ BELL'S - FOLLOW_PAULINE BONUS

FOLLOW_PAULINE EP.1

BELL'S TROUGH PAULINE'S EYES

After I rejoined Pauline in Torquay for the 2011 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, I’ve been surprised to see how the young rookie I knew had almost already turned into a real Aussie!! After 3 months spent in Australia, she had become a real left hand driver, a triplej fan but fortunately not a vegemite one.

I quickly understand I’m going to have to follow her lead: wake up at 5.30 to be sure to get a little session before the 7am call! As Pauline had requested, Gille Darqué (aka Kéké), came from France to coach her. Those two surely know each other and have been traveling together for the last 7 years.
And the chemistry still works since Pauline won her first round against current ASP World Tour leader Carissa Moore (HAW)!

Round 3 is a complete different story. In some tricky conditions, Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), four times reigning World Champion, managed to catch the only wave good enough to score and sent Pauline in Round 4 where she’ll get one last chance to stay in the race to ring the Bell. Unfortunately, Pauline’s contest ends in this same Round 4 against Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS). The only comfort in this defeat is to know that Sally will finally win this 2011 Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach.

But for Pauline, this new experience has been so much more than a good result in a contest. She was part of one of the most historical surfing celebration. It’s now time to start packing again. Next step is Taranaki, New Zeland. Stay tuned.
